Summary[]
Sprinkles Newman, the local TV meteorologist, is coming to Ella Mentry Elementary School! She's going to teach A.J. and the gang all about the weather. But what happens when a hurricane comes to the school?
Plot[]
The book starts with AJ complaining about how he hates rain.
Miss Newman suggests a contest where she will ask questions about weather. However, since she does not have her cue cards, she even accepts silly answers as correct unless they are completely wrong. (e.g.When she asks "How is snow white?", AJ answers: "Ask the seven dwarfs!." Even though this has nothing to do with weather, she accepts this as correct. However, when she asks "What is the opposite of hurricane?" and Emily answers "No hurricane", she says it is wrong). By the end of the contest, AJ and Andrea both win the contest and therefore earn the prize, which is a ride on a Channel 4 weather balloon. This makes AJ disappointed because he's been expecting a candy bar or million dollars as a prize. Not only that, but also he didn't like the fact that he had to go on a balloon ride with Andrea.
AJ tries to avoid the balloon ride with several ways: First, he tells Ryan he can go on a balloon ride instead of him, much to his excitement. However, Miss Newman says AJ can't do that since he is the one who won the contest, therefore cannot give the prize away. Next, he says maybe he will get on a balloon ride some other time, saying that he needs to go to the bathroom. Andrea dismisses this as an excuse of trying to avoid the balloon ride with her. Having no choice, AJ reluctantly goes on a balloon ride with Andrea and Miss Newman. Andrea finds it very fun, but AJ begins to feel scared. When AJ starts to become pale and sweat, Miss Newman and Andrea ask him if something is wrong. At first he tries to deny this, saying that he is fine. However, he eventually admits that he is afraid of heights, which is the real reason why he tried to avoid the balloon ride. Miss Newman asks him why he didn't let her know earlier, AJ says he didn't want his friends to know. Andrea tells him it is nothing to be ashamed of as many people are afraid of heights. AJ tells her not to tell anyone because his friends would make fun of him for the rest of his life if they ever knew it. Andrea promises she won't and tries to encourage him to go through the balloon ride along with Miss Newman.
Suddenly, a haboob comes and disaster strikes. The trio are confused of what to do until Miss Newman tells them to start filming the video. Andrea says she cannot do it because sand went into her eyes. Therefore, AJ picks up the camera and follows the instructions Miss Newman gives him. She explains about haboobs and how to avoid them. Soon, the haboob is gone and they safely land in front of the school. The whole school cheers, saying that it was awesome and cool. AJ claims it is the greatest day of his life. However, when Andrea suddenly gives him a kiss saying that he was so brave filming that video, he claims it is the worst day of his life.
