Summary[]
Election day is right around the corner, and guess who's running for class president? A.J. and Andrea! Mayor Hubble is going to teach the kids all the ins and outs of politics, and every vote counts. Who's going to win?
Plot[]
It is a few days before Election Day in Ella Mentry School, and Andrea decides she will run for third grade president. AJ happens to overhear that Andrea will make students wear uniforms and get more school supplies if she became president. During recess, AJ, Michael, Ryan, Neil, and Alexia gather in the monkey bars and talk about how horrible it would be if Andrea became president. One of them says that someone needs to run against her. When they hear this, they all look at AJ, to his confusion. AJ asks why everyone is looking at him, to which they say he should run against Andrea. AJ asks why he should do that as he doesn't even want to be president. They remind him of how horrible it would be if Andrea were president, to which AJ agrees and suggests someone else apart from him runs. However, they urge AJ to do it as he is the only one who could beat her. Ryan says that it means AJ loves Andrea if he doesn't want to run against her, to which AJ strongly denies saying that it simply means he doesn't want to become president. Then Ryan and Michael start making fun of AJ about being in love with her. Annoyed, AJ reluctantly agrees to run for third grade president.
AJ and his friends follow Mayor Hubble, and they get at Andrea's house. AJ reminds him that Andrea isn't home, to which Mayor Hubble says that is the reason why they are going. They get into Andrea's room and find out she has won lots of awards. Not only that, but also Mayor Hubble reads Andrea's diary as well. She has written several things about her classes outside of school, until they find "three horrible words" - I LIKE AJ. AJ freaks out and decides he wants to leave already. Finally, Election Day arrives. After AJ votes for himself several times by wearing disguises, he goes to the hallway. He is stopped by Andrea, who tells him good luck even though she hopes he would lose. AJ says the same thing back to her and tries to walk away. However, he stops and asks Andrea if she likes him, having had read her diary before. Soon, he regrets asking this as Andrea does not answer for such a long time. Finally, Andrea says "of course not", saying that she can't stand him. AJ says he can't stand her either and the two leave each other alone.
Mr.Klutz announces that the third grade president is nobody - in other words, neither AJ nor Andrea. Everyone gasps and asks why, to which Mr.Klutz says Mayor Hubble has been helping both of them and asks officer Spence to arrest him. AJ thinks it isn't so bad after all because he didn't want to become president anyway - he just didn't want Andrea to become president. Their third grade president turns out to become Neil's pet ferret, Mr.Wiggles. Mr.Wiggles must have been excited, as he ran off from Neil's hands and ran around. Everyone hollers and shrieks, to which AJ considers it as an exciting Election Day. The book ends as AJ predicts what would happen later on.
