Summary[]

When summer vacation comes to an end, AJ and Andrea are sent to a summer camp that will help them get ready for school.

Plot[]

Andrea talks about her love of punctuation. AJ's family comes, and AJ and Andrea argue over what evacuate means. During their argument, AJ's father tells Andrea's family that they are on their way to the hotel. Hearing this, Andrea's mother suggests that they stay in their house. AJ is disgusted, whereas Andrea is excited to have fun with him. When they get to Andrea's room, he sees Andrea hiding something behind her. He asks what it is, to which she responds it is her secret diary. AJ says he doesn't want to read it, and Andrea says he can't even read it anyway. However, it turns out Andrea makes a mistake because this makes AJ want to read it. He ultimately takes it from Andrea and read it for a few minutes. After that, he says that he's not her boyfriend and is not even her friend - instead, he says he is her sworn enemy of her life. However, Andrea dismisses this as a lie because of what her mother told her: "if a boy acts mean to a girl, that means he is in love with her." Therefore, she thinks AJ is obviously in love with her.Later that night, Andrea suggests to tell ghost stories, to which AJ refuses and try to sleep. During the night, AJ scares Andrea by pretending to be a ghost. However, Andrea tells him to knock it off as she knows it is obviously AJ. Again, they break into an argument, their fathers come in and tell them to sleep.

The next morning, Andrea and AJ argue about what to do together in the morning, Then their mothers tell them that they will go back-to-school clothes shopping, to Andrea's joy and AJ's dismay. During shopping, Andrea tries to get AJ say something nice to her by trying all sorts of clothes she chose. Needless to say, AJ is grumpy and barely responds to it. At all a sudden, AJ disappears, which shocks Andrea and their mothers. The whole shop starts finding AJ until it turns out he was just hiding behind some clothes in order to avoid "his enemy". After finishing clothes shopping, they decide to go back-to-school supplies shopping. Their mothers tell them to hold hands no matter where they go. When AJ says he is not holding hands with a girl, their mothers tell him off. Reluctantly, AJ holds Andrea's hand and go to buy supplies. During shopping, AJ and Andrea happen to meet Michael and Ryan. As soon as AJ sees them, he tries to let go of Andrea's hand, only for Andrea to hold it tighter. Due to this, Michael and Ryan make fun of AJ about being in love with Andrea. Annoyed, AJ shouts that they are not in love and they are never getting married. Michael and Ryan tease him again by singing a song about "AJ and Andrea sitting on a tree, K-I-S-S-I-N-G", which annoys AJ to the point where he almost explodes.

After finishing their shopping, AJ goes straight to the living room while Andrea goes to her room to organize her clothes and supplies. After finishing organizing, Andrea comes down to the room and finds AJ playing video games. Andrea asks AJ if watching TV and playing video games is all he ever does, to which he says he likes doing them and insults her, saying that she doesn't know how to have fun. When Andrea says that she does know how to have fun as well, AJ points out she has fun organizing school supplies. Andrea knows that she actually does, but she does not want to admit it. Again, they break into an argument about what to do together, which makes their mothers angry. They decide to send AJ and Andrea to Day Camp, which horrifies AJ.

In camp, they meet their friends: Michael, Ryan, Neil, Emily, and Alexia. Mrs.Janey tells them they will be learning things instead of having fun, which makes AJ faint. When AJ manages to wake up, he asks if this is literally school during summer, to which Mrs.Janey says he is right. Unlike Andrea, AJ finds the camp really boring - until opposite day, which is the day they do everything the opposite. Because of this, Andrea says that "they should have fun and go crazy", which really means "they should study". AJ says she is right for once in her life, and everyone has fun together. The books ends as Andrea edits her list of what she loves, and talking about what she wants to happen later on, such as talking AJ into playing with her barbies, holding AJ's hand, hoping AJ will become mature. She ends the book, saying: "That will be easy!".

Trivia[]

  • The book is told in Andrea's point of view instead of AJ's.
  • There are also a few differences between AJ's narration and Andrea's narration. Here are some examples:
    • AJ starts books with "My name is AJ and I hate school (or something else he hates besides school)", but Andrea starts this book with "My name is Andrea and I love school", which is basically the opposite.
    • At the end of each book, AJ recaps the events of the book and wonders what might happen next. When he recaps, he says "Maybe…" when he thinks that a certain predicament that happened might improve. His finishing sentence is "But it won't be easy!". When Andrea recaps the events, she says "I hope that…" as she thinks of her future goals, and finishes with "That will be easy!", indicating that she's more optimistic and goal-planning than AJ.
